I got you! -on Klarna
Have you ever dined and dashed? Now you can on Klarna for DoorDash and get caught
When I was a kid living in South Philly, we would do the most ratchet things imaginable. One of those things were dining and dashing. Luckily I only did it once and nipped it in the bud like a bad habit with my emo hardcore friends from Delco (a suburb of Philly, please don’t look it up) and to be honest, it felt liberating and awful at the same time. To our defense, the waiter took FOREVER to get to our table bring us our bill. To be fair, it was in dining and dashing territory but more so we just got up and left. The place was called Johnny Rockets on 5th and South Street in Philly. The burgers were not memorable and it was open from 1997 to 2018. It was never able to sustain itself because it did not care about community and South Street was turning into a literal hell. Since then, South St. has been getting it’s groove back. I go back from time to time and always see friend and guest of the show, Robert Perry of Tattooed Mom on 6th and South. Tell em’ Rashad from Wear Many Hats sent you!
Pre-social media and tech, life was simpler then. We would ask our parents to borrow money, tell friends that we would pay them back, be closer with our roommates and get coffee with them because we weren’t keeping IOUs or making sure you paid us back. It was a way to show affirmation and that if we’re going out with you, we liked you and that’s why we do it. We picked and chose our battles. We made sure to treat you because you knew you deserved it.
I have a co-worker that just moved to NYC and doesn’t know what Sweetgreen is. I really like him though. He’s a sweet, southern, wholesome, Kentucky boy and his spirit hasn’t been broken from NYC yet. To not be in the know must be heaven. Fair warning, it won’t be easy for him but after 5 years it gets better. He won’t be reading this, so to our subscribers who hit 5 years of living in NYC you got this. To the locals, you rule and we’ve learned so much from you. My co-worker has helped me with very small production tasks that I’ve had to do since I’ve met him and I’ve treated him out to meals, and rides. The production tasks literally only takes an hour to do with no heavy lifting required. Just to be there in spirit in case anything happens. We’re basically hanging out.
If I had to treat him by paying for his meals using Klarna, I would lose. Knowing that I have to finance meals sounds miserable. Credit card debt in America keeps getting worse and now knowing that we can ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ sounds like another tier of Hell. We can just buy anything now. How are we supposed to teach financial literacy to the young ones, our kids, and even adults who had no sense of money when we can obtain things at the tips of our fingertips. I’m trying to consume less. I’m glad I live in a small apartment only because it limits me from buying even more.
I got into a jam in December that I survived because of BS that happened and so I went on a buying frenzy. Therapy would have helped but retail therapy helped me even more. Let me tell you what I bought:
2x Bode Jackets
1x Balenciaga Jacket
4x Contax T3
1x Contax G2
1x R13 Cardigan Sweater
After that I cut myself off and did a no buy 2025 for fashion and clothes items. Luckily I was brought up by 2 asian parents who taught me how to save and invest. One parent has a successful eBay store, and thought me how to flip things with ease ever since I was a kid. I am able to now be content with my purchases and off load the Cameras to friends for a good deal, without losing any money. I also bought everything on a damn deal so I didn’t lose anything and my mental went back up. I was in a dark place. A really dark place and I got out because of going ham on purchases. I wouldn’t be able to get out of my dark place if I put everything on KLARNA. I’d be in a hole even Shia Lebouf couldn’t get out of (he could, but where his career went, it’s damn near over)
I got back into a buying frenzy for MATSAR, my new matcha wellness, food & beverage, CPG brand that I won’t STFU about but it really has been a good investment and project that I absolutely love doing. The outpour of love that everyone has shown about it has been so worth it. After friend and guest of Wear Many Hats, Anna Z Gray of Things I Would Buy If I Didn’t Have To Pay Rent hit me up to debut vendor at Tata Bazaar earlier this month, I wouldn’t have bought so many lovely items for the pop up. Seriously, my set up looked stunning. I am very proud of where our setup has landed. I had to also vend the opening party and make Matcha Martinis so when Anna calls you know I had to hit up the Dover Street Market and cop that Aphex Twin x Supreme mohair sweater.
I paid for everything straight up cash. Well credit, but paid it back immediately to get the points of course. I’m going back to Asia in Spring/Summer and need to find a way to get back from Japan. So that’s what I’ll be using the points for. If I were to be using KLARNA, Bilt, etc.. would I be able to afford any of this? No I’d be in deep crap. So this is a fair warning to everyone to pay your credit cards on time and don’t use Afterpay for buying your groceries.
Be responsible.
